Wayne Phillips B.Ed (Hons)
Kettlebell Instructor Level 1 (January 2005)
Occupation: Physical Education teacher
Situated: Carlisle, Cumbria
I have taught Physical Education at Trinity school (a large 11 to
18 comprehensive school) for the last 12 years. Having been a gymnast
in my youth and a rugby player for twenty years, I had always had
an interest in strength training. When I retired from playing rugby
in my early 30’s, I took up the challenge of powerlifting and
entered the North West powerlifting championships in Manchester in
2001. I was pleasantly surprised to win the 110kg category with a
total of 615kg.
However, after 2 years of powerlifting, I injured my shoulder and
stopped training. Although my shoulder healed, I only trained on a
very infrequent basis thereafter. Inevitably, I lost strength and
muscle mass and gained considerable body fat. In July 2005 I discovered
kettlebell training and have been blown away by it. As well as losing
nearly three stone in weight, my core strength has skyrocketed and
I feel almost as fit at 39 as I did when I did gymnastics as a young
teen.
Following my own fantastic experience with kettlebells, I was curious
to see whether I could generate interest in kettlebell training
amongst sixth form students at my school. Stan Pike at ‘Intensefitness’
kindly agreed to lend me some 16kg kettlebells to carry out a small-scale
study to meet this end. You can see the results of this study on
the UKKA website.

Having huge belief in this wonderful, adaptable training medium,
I continue to spread the word about the effectiveness of kettlebell
training to meet a multitude of training goals, including: Bodyfat
loss; Cardio-vascular fitness; Strength / power development and
all manner of 'Sports Specific' applications.
If you are new to kettlebell training, I am available for instruction
at weekends and school holidays.
