Ever since I picked up my father’s old barbell set in my early teens I have had a passion for physical training, which naturally lead me to a career in the Royal Marine Commandos. Military fitness demands all-round development of the body (Flexibility, Strength, Stamina, Endurance, Skill(s) and Power) and of the mind, “No one said it was going to be easy!”
I discovered Kettlebells during my experiments whilst rehabilitating my severe back injury. I soon realised that kettlebells represented the “Holy Grail” of fitness equipment for anyone and everyone, but especially for the Royal Marines who requirement of all-round fitness is expected, even during deployment/operations where we are often exposed to huge constraints in time, space and facilities. As such kettlebells have become the lynchpin of my training for several years now, especially when on deployment where I no longer have to improvise fitness equipment from rocks and sandbags – though, I see this ability as being my main strength for both myself and with those I have instructed over the years.
Instructing, teaching and coaching physical training is the “love of my life,” which has been reflected by my enthusiastic and innovative approach to those souls fortunate enough to have been under my care.
I earned the Physical Training medal during my six-month recruit training and I placed first on both my PT1 and Remedial (Rehabilitation) instructor courses. I have represented the UK twice in military skills competitions and have seen three operational tours of Iraq, amidst many deployments worldwide. So, to prove I can “walk the walk, as well as talk the talk” here are a few of my other physical accomplishments:

1. I Squatted 200lb for 90 repetitions in 5 minutes.
2. I completed 270 Over-grasp Pull-ups AND 270 P-bar Dips in sets of 10 in 30 minutes for charity.
3. I completed the Lymp-Poole Race, a double marathon along the Devon-Dorset coastal path.
4. I have P-bar Dipped with my bodyweight in plates hung around my waist.

I have been chosen by my peers to instruct at the Royal Marine School of Physical Training, where I had to organise, administrate, teach, coach, appraise and mentor our prospective PTI courses/students. This was without doubt my most rewarding role, followed closely by my placements as a Remedial Instructor at the Commando Training Centre and HMS Raleigh, each has provided its own challenge and difficulties in relation to the levels of fitness and motivation of those in my care. Outside of the Corps, I have worked with a variety of people from the GB Waterpolo (F/U18) team, teenagers on the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, the RN Rugby (F) team and the Amateur Swimming Association.
