I've been practicing Kyokushin Karate since I was 14 and for the past
8
years I got very much involved in knockdown fighting. Power is very
important in knockdown as the only way to score a point is by hurting
your
opponent or knocking them down/out. So, besides working on constantly
improving my technique, I've been consciously going to the gym, trying
all
their latest equipment working hard at developing explosive power
for my
strikes and a strong core, and sometimes telling myself that although
it's
karate I love, not going to the gym, this is one of those things that
are
good for me even if I didn't find it all that much fun.
Then, one day, my husband Malcolm brought home a couple of kettlebells.
I
have to admit that I've rolled my eyes in despair as he placed these
2
lumps of metal (11 & 16kg) next to the fireplace in the living
room. But,
as he started huffing and puffing swinging them, and as I'm of the
principle don't knock it until you try it, I picked up the 11kg ...thingy
... and started to mess about with it, trying hard not to laugh while
doing the 2 arm swing and the 1 arm swing. There wasn't much to it
and
after 30 minutes I didn't feel very tired but got bored. The next
day I
was so stiff I could hardly get out of bed!! The rest, as they say,
is
history.
I stopped going to the gym immediately. We bought two of Pavel
Tsatsuline's books on kettlebells and got a few exercises from there
and
which were later superceded by a copy of the Kettlebell Bible. Malcolm
was
recommended Steve Angell by Stan Pike and we started travelling to
Milton
Keynes every now and again to train under Steve to make sure that
we did
things properly.
There has been a vast increase in my punching power; my upper body
strength has increased very quickly, without bulking up. My core stability
is second to none - far better than anyone elses at the club. And
I do
have fun with the kettlebells, now that I have an arsenal of exercises
to
play with.
I'm very much interested in exercises that compliment Martial Arts
training, that help build explosive power in arms and legs, that build
core stability and that teach the body to work together, upper and
lower
body as one (basically, I'm interested in any kettlebell exercise!
